Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot and rushed to hospital, according to reports.

The incident occurred in the town of Handlova, about 150 kilometers northeast of the capital Bratislava, after a government meeting.

A suspect has been arrested, with dramatic footage showing a man handcuffed on the ground.

The shooting took place in front of the local Culture House, where Fico had come to meet supporters.

A reporter for the daily Dennik N heard gunshots then saw rescuers carrying Fico, a well-known Putin ally, to a car.

“I was just going to shake his hand,” said one man who witnessed the shooting and did not wish to be named. His wife added that she heard three or four gunshots and said: “When the shots rang out, I almost went deaf. »

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Lubos Blaha confirmed the incident during a session of Parliament and adjourned it until further notice. President Zuzana Caputova condemned “a brutal and merciless attack” on the prime minister.

“I’m shocked,” Caputova said. “I wish Robert Fico great strength at this critical time and a speedy recovery from this attack. »
