Armed bandits grouped within the “viv ansanm” coalition controlled several localities in Solino on the evening of Wednesday, November 13, 2024. They burst in after the shooting death of “Swat Team” police officer Petit-Dieu Jeff, who fought alongside the population against the gangsters. In dire straits, hundreds of families fled the area and its surroundings to take refuge at the premises of the Office for Citizen Protection (OPC), in Bourdon.
THE HAITI FACTOR, November 14, 2024._Several hundred families were chased on Thursday, November 14, 2024, from their homes in Solino, a district of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti.
They involuntarily take part in this process in order to escape from the fury of armed gangs who have taken control of several localities.
The gangsters set up shop in Caravelle, Fouchard, Déjean, Ti Thémas, ruelle Souchet, Rue Silvia, Ti Chérie, ruelle Anglade, as well as certain areas of Nazon and Delmas 24, among others.
The internally displaced persons who do not know which way to turn in the face of the ferocious demonstration of the bandits, take refuge in the courtyard of the building housing the Central Office of the Office of Citizen Protection (OPC), in Bourdon, Port-au- Prince.
In addition to the OPC, other families occupy certain educational establishments in the area. Solino falls into the hands of gangs after several months of popular resistance and intense clashes between bandits and police, including Petit-Dieu Jeff, who was shot dead Wednesday evening in bloody battles.
Visiting the office of the new Citizen Protector, Me Jean Wilner, the Executive Director of the “Karl Lévêque Center”, Gardy Maisonnoeuvre describes the situation of these families fleeing the gang war as a “serious humanitarian disaster”.
The human rights defender holds the Haitian state, Haitian society and the international community accountable for the worsening of the country’s security situation.
He took advantage of his presence at the OPC to call for popular solidarity to curb the gangs in their abuses.
The human rights activist also asks the police to support the Haitian population in difficulty, particularly families chased by gangsters.
The Executive Director of the “Fondasyon Je Klere”, Marie Yolène Gilles also visited the displaced people and provided them with her support.
