Several prisoners from the Saint Marc civil prison escaped this Friday, August 16, 2024. Videos circulating on social networks show inmates without uniforms climbing the barbed wire wall of the prison to escape.
The city of San Marcos is in turmoil this Friday after prisoners managed to escape from the city’s penitentiary, which has been under tension for several days, according to the newspaper. Miami Herald who reports that the population has not stopped calling the police to report the presence of armed men who “have made an incursion into the city.”
The exact number of prisoners who managed to climb the prison wall and jump to the other side is not yet known, but in one of the videos someone can be heard commenting “10 or 12 have already escaped.”

Alerted, the Saint-Marcoise police issued a search notice for the escapees while asking the population to report any suspicious activities relating to the fugitives.
The escape comes five months after a devastating attack by armed gangs on Port-au-Prince’s largest prison (Pénitencier National) that resulted in the escape of more than 4,000 prisoners, some of whom are still at large.
Marie Yolene Gilles of Fondasyon Je Klere is not at all surprised by this new prisoner escape in Haiti. For the human rights defender, it was predictable.
“Once one prison falls, others fall; it’s like a domino effect,” she told the Miami Herald.
It should be noted that the San Marcos penitentiary had 500 prisoners. At present, it is not known how many are left and the exact number who have managed to escape.
