By defeating Frenchwoman Diana Parry (6-1, 1-6, 6-4) in the first round of Wimbledon on Monday, Haitian-born Japanese Naomi Osaka, whose grass is not her favourite court, finally won her first match at Wimbledon since 2018.
It was not easy for the four-time Grand Slam champion who let the second set slip away (6-1) and lost two break points in the third set. The match was even 4-all at one point in the last set.
However, Osaka ended up winning the last two games to beat Perry (6-4) in the final set and advance to the second round of Wimbledon where she will face American Emma Navarro on Wednesday.
“I’m really happy to be here,” said 113.e world in post-match conference.
“Wimbledon was the first tournament I watched after I got pregnant and my daughter will be one tomorrow (referring to this Tuesday, editor’s note),” she revealed.
Indeed, Naomi Osaka gave birth last year to a little girl, Shai, who celebrates her first birthday this Tuesday.
