In a press release published this Monday, April 15, 2024, the European Union requested the appointment “without further delay” of the Presidential Council of the Transition “following the publication of the official decree establishing the procedure for establishing a Council Transitional Presidential (CPT)”. The EU wants this council to nominate a new prime minister.

The EU press release underlined the urgency of the situation and called for rapid action from the Haitian government. “Following the publication of the official decree establishing the procedure for establishing a Presidential Transitional Council (CPT) in Haiti, it is now crucial that the CPT be formally appointed by the outgoing government of Prime Minister Ariel Henry without further delay . This will then allow the appointment of a new prime minister by this council,” the EU wrote in the press release.

The European Union stressed the need for a Haitian national solution to end the current political vacuum and address the multiple challenges facing the country.

“The country urgently needs a Haitian solution to end the current political vacuum and address the long-standing political, security and humanitarian crisis. We call on all Haitian political forces to sincerely cooperate in achieving this objective,” the EU said.

According to the EU, the appointment of members of the presidential transitional council is an essential prerequisite to enable the deployment of the multinational security support mission, mandated by Resolution 2699 of the United Nations Security Council.

This mission, according to the EU, aims to support the efforts of the Haitian National Police in its fight against gangs, to restore the rule of law and security in the country, and to create conditions conducive to holding democratic elections.
