Haitian society stakeholders will be mobilized during a national conference to shape a new democratic and sustainable era in the country

In an unprecedented effort to address the critical challenges facing the country, the Presidential Transitional Council published, this Saturday, July 20, an order concerning the establishment of an exceptional participatory mechanism called “National Conference”. This forum brings together actors from all walks of life, associations, organizations, movements and interest groups, all authorized to debate problems concerning the fundamental interests of the Haitian Nation.

The National Conference is a time-limited initiative, aimed at allowing all actors in Haitian society to actively contribute to the development of appropriate and accepted resolutions. These resolutions will serve as proposals for the development of normative texts and guidelines covering three major projects: the revision of the current Constitution, the development of a new social project for Haiti and the establishment of new relations between the State and society, the decree details.

One of the major objectives of this National Conference is to create a new Constitution that preserves the democratic achievements and aspirations for sustainable development of the Haitian people. This new Constitution will solemnly guarantee the fundamental rights of the human person and clearly express the rights and duties of the citizen.

The national conference will also have to work on a new social project for Haiti that must allow for the creation of a socially just, economically free and politically independent Haitian nation; establish a stable and strong state, capable of protecting values, traditions, sovereignty, independence and the national vision; and strengthen national unity, by eliminating all discrimination between urban and rural populations, the decree continues.

A Technical Secretariat for the Organization of the National Conference is also created, whose mandate is to provide the Executive Secretariat of the Steering Committee; coordinate and organize work around the three (3) major projects of the National Conference; propose to the Steering Committee, for decision-making purposes, the guidelines to guide the strategies, activities and operations of the National Conference; receive and study any program or project related to the National Conference, and analyze its relevance in relation to the provisions of this Decree, among others.

The National Conference process is based on principles of transparency and inclusion. All actors, whether from civil society, political parties, organizations or movements, are invited to actively participate in the debates and submit their proposals. This participatory approach aims to create consensus around the challenges and solutions needed for Haiti’s future.
