Plea for the integration of women in the next Haitian government, an urgent appeal from the Fanm Angaje pou Ayiti Platform to Prime Minister Garry Conille and the Presidential Council

In an open letter to the Presidential Council and the new Prime Minister Garry Conille, the FANM Angaje pou Ayiti platform reiterates its plea for the inclusion of women within the next government and other institutions of the Republic. She emphasizes that the formation of the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT), composed exclusively of 7 male advisors, constitutes a serious setback for gender equity and the political participation of women in Haiti.

The FANM ANGAJE pou Ayiti platform draws attention to the crucial need for inclusive and active participation of all components of society, particularly women, in resolving the multidimensional crisis the country is going through. The organization recalls that Haitian women have always been engaged and continue to play an essential role in social reconstruction, the restoration of democracy, security and peace.

The signatories of the letter emphasize the skills of women in terms of social calming, mediation and conflict management, essential assets to resolve the current crisis. They denounce the deterioration of social and political relations, which has led to the collapse of the State and institutions, and have exacerbated violence against women, particularly in the exercise of their civil and political rights.

The FANM ANGAJE pou Ayiti platform also recalls Haiti’s legal and constitutional obligations, in particular article 17.1 of the Haitian Constitution of 1987 amended in 2011, which requires a minimum representation of 30% of women in decision-making spaces.

She also cites international commitments, such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the Beijing Platform for Action and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which affirm the rights of women to participate in decision-making processes.

The PLATFÒM FANM ANGAJE urges the new authorities to respect these constitutional achievements and international commitments, by working together, women and men, for the good of the Haitian nation. “THE DAY WE ARRIVE TO TAKE CONSCIOUSNESS TO WORK TOGETHER, WOMEN AND MEN, IN THE INTEREST OF HAITI, HOW BEAUTIFUL IT WILL BE! LET’S SEEK TO RESTORE PEACE IN THE COUNTRY, WOMEN AND MEN,” proclaims the letter, followed by the signatures of Yveline Antenor, Lamercie Charles Pierre, and Marjory Michel.
