The National Hurricane Center (based in the United States) announced the formation of the first named storm of the 2024 hurricane season. Named Alberto, it was located this Wednesday morning east of Tampico, Mexico, and southeast of Brownsville, Texas (USA).

According to forecasts, Alberto is expected to make landfall this Thursday in Mexico before quickly dissipating. Despite this anticipated weakening, tropical storm warnings were issued for parts of the Gulf Coast and Texas as the storm could become the first hurricane of the season.

The Haiti Hydrometeorological Unit (UHM) confirmed that Alberto poses no danger to Haiti. The 2024 hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, promises to be particularly active with at least 23 named cyclone systems expected. Of these, 12 could develop into hurricanes, making this year one of the most intense in terms of hurricane activity.

The National Hurricane Center predicts almost double the number of cyclone systems and hurricanes compared to annual averages.
