The PNH declares the end of playtime for the gangs and takes back control of the General Hospital.
At a press conference, the acting director general of the Haitian National Police (PNH), Rameau Normil, firmly announced that the period of tolerance for gangs is over. “Rekreyasyon an fini pou gang yo,” he said, indicating that although the details of the operations are not revealed for strategic reasons, law enforcement is determined to neutralize the gangs.
Rameau Normil also announced on Monday, July 8, 2024 that the premises of the General Hospital, the largest hospital in the country, have been under the control of law enforcement since Sunday. This establishment had been occupied by armed men since March, sowing terror in downtown Port-au-Prince.
To strengthen security measures, the base of the Departmental Operation and Intervention Brigade (BOID) was reinforced and a Task Force was created to take over the Gressier Police Station. The new police chief expressed optimism about imminent security advances in a country where 80% of the capital is under gang control.
For a quick and effective action against insecurity, several meetings have already taken place between the high command of the PNH and the heads of the multinational forces present. Mr. Normil requested the support of Haitian citizens for a solid marriage between the population and the police bearing the pseudonym MPP.
Godfrey Otunge, head of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, reaffirmed the willingness of the Kenyan police to work closely with the PNH to secure the country’s airports, ports, schools and major roads, and above all to track down gangs so that the population can regain some peace.
