NBA finalist in 1981 and 1986 with Houston, Robert Reid died at the age of 68 following cancer.
Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta announced the death of Robert Reid at the age of 68 following a concert. Coming out of a Texan university, this former winger still lived in Houston where he is a true local legend. Drafted in the second round in 1977, Reid wore the Rockets jersey from 1977 to 1988.
With his 16 points on average to support Moses Malone and Calvin Murphy, he allowed the Rockets to win their first final in history in 1981. A real achievement since Houston had finished the season with a negative record. Beaten by the Celtics, the Rockets reached another final in 1986, and this time, Reid was surrounded by “Twin Towers” Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon. Once again, the Rockets lost to Larry Bird and his gang.
More than 900 matches in the NBA
After 10 years in Houston, Robert Reid finished his career in Charlotte, Portland and Philadelphia. Upon arrival, he will have played more than 900 matches and averaged 11.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists.
“I had the privilege of knowing Robert for over 40 years, and his presence always brought joy and positivity wherever he went,” writes Tilman Fertitta in his press release. “I will never forget the Rockets teams he was a part of in the 80s, that made the Finals, and the love he had for the sport. My sincere condolences to his wife, Diana, and to all those who were dear to him. Robert’s absence will be deeply felt and we will remember him fondly.”
