Holding of a meeting between the Presidential Transitional Council and the Higher Council of the Judiciary with a view to resolving the problems of the Haitian judicial system.

On Monday, July 8, 2024, Presidential Advisors Emmanuel Vertilaire, Louis Gérald Gilles and Smith Augustin met with the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSPJ) to discuss the problems facing the judicial system in Haiti, the Presidency informed in a note. During this important meeting, Presidential Advisor Emmanuel Vertilaire praised the courage of the magistrates who, despite precarious conditions, continue to serve the population.

Emmanuel Vertilaire said he hoped that magistrates would do their best to have an efficient and fair judicial system. Presidential Advisor Smith Augustin, for his part, requested a detailed report on the functioning of the judicial system and the presentation of the CSPJ budget before the budget conference.

The President of the CSPJ, Jean Joseph Lebrun, present at this meeting, presented his words of congratulations to the Presidential Transitional Council for this working session, which allows to address the problems of the judicial system. Presidential Advisor Louis Gérald Gilles, for his part, also thanked the CSPJ for having exposed the current problems and pleaded for an increase in the salaries of magistrates.

In this sense, the Presidential Advisors asked the CSPJ a document detailing the problems of the judicial system, and another working session is planned with the Prime Minister, the Ministers of Justice and Finance, and the CSPJ to decide on the various problems facing the judicial system, in particular the dysfunction of certain courts and the low budget allocated to the CSPJ.
