The rectorate of the State University of Haiti wants to make a significant impact by creating the Monferrier Dorval Chair of Constitutional Law within the Faculty of Law and Economics (FDSE) of Port-au-Prince. This initiative, led by Rector Fritz Deshommes, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Jean Poincy, and Vice-Rector for Research Jacques Blaise, aims to honor the memory of a man who devoted his life to promoting fundamental values and defending human rights.
The late Professor and Bar President Monferrier Dorvalassassinated on August 28, 2020, was an emblematic figure in the Haitian legal landscape. His unwavering commitment to the rule of law and his passion for teaching have touched many generations of students and legal professionals. The creation of this chair is of particular importance, as it aims to perpetuate his work and transmit his values to future generations, the rectorate said.
According to an act published by the UEH, the objectives of the Monferrier Dorval Chair are ambitious and essential for the development of constitutional law in Haiti. It aims to strengthen teaching and research in this crucial field, while promoting an informed debate on constitutional issues that affect the identity and future of the nation. Building on the legacy of Monferrier Dorval, this chair also intends to contribute to the consolidation of the rule of law and the strengthening of state institutions.
Beyond academic teaching, the Monferrier Dorval Chair aims to become a space for reflection and exchange on the country’s constitutional issues. It will serve as a platform for conferences, seminars and publications, thus involving civil society in the debate on democratic values and fundamental rights.
The creation of this chair is not only a tribute to a great patriot, but also a response to the current challenges facing Haiti in terms of governance and justice. By establishing an academic framework dedicated to the study of constitutional law, the State University of Haiti demonstrates its commitment to training competent jurists who are aware of their responsibility towards society.
