In a note made public this Tuesday, November 12, 2024, the US Department of State announced that following intensive discussions with the parties, the United States recognizes that the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT) in Haiti and the Prime Minister Garry Conille have been unable to move forward constructively, and we take note of the CPT’s decision to appoint his successor. Thus, the United States says it looks forward to working with new Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé and the CPT to advance urgent priorities in the months to come.
“The United States also thanks former Prime Minister Conille for the distinguished services he rendered to his country,” we read in the document in which Uncle Sam congratulates what he calls the commitment of CPT and the new Prime Minister to release a joint action plan that outlines their vision to improve security and governance, and chart a path towards free and fair elections.
“The United States considers it essential that it clearly delineates the roles and responsibilities of the PTC vis-à-vis the Prime Minister and includes measures to hold each other accountable, as necessary, while avoiding other traffic jams,” the note continues.
As a message to corrupt advisor-presidents, the United States stressed that it is also imperative to promote accountability within the CPT in order to maintain its credibility with the Haitian people and the international community. Furthermore, they added, the acute and immediate needs of the Haitian people require that the transitional government prioritize governance over the competing personal interests of political actors.
“The United States remains firmly committed to supporting the Haitian people, who are facing historic levels of violence, food insecurity and displacement,” the document concludes.
