The Biden administration announced the renewal of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians, while expanding access to the program to new beneficiaries. According to Secretary of the Interior Alejandro Mayorkas, all Haitians present in the United States through June 3, 2024, are now eligible.
This decision, motivated by the critical situation in Haiti, was welcomed by Guerline Jozef, director of the organization “Haitian Bridge Alliance”, who underlines the importance of the mobilizations which led to this positive outcome.
Guerline Jozef also clarified the eligibility criteria and the application process, calling for caution to avoid scams. With this measure, approximately 500,000 Haitians could benefit from this program, strengthening their protection against deportations.
Despite this progress, Jozef insists on the need to continue advocating for permanent solutions, such as obtaining permanent residency for Haitians, and stopping deportations to Haiti, where the situation remains alarming.
