ESPN’s annual ranking of the World’s 50 Best Women Footballers continues to shine a spotlight on the exceptional talents shaping the world’s women’s game. For the 2024 edition, 18 women’s football experts were consulted to establish this ranking, including coaches, journalists and administrators from around the world. Among the players who stand out this year, Haitian international Melchie Daelle Dumornay takes 21st place, a real feat for a player who is still young, but already essential on the international scene.
A meteoric rise
Since leaving Haiti in 2021, Dumornay has continued to climb the ranks of European football. After a promising start at Reims, she joined OL, one of the most prestigious clubs on the continent. The 20-year-old was crowned CONCACAF Player of the Year 2024, surpassing names such as American Sophia Smith, Jamaican Khadija “Bunny” Shaw, and Mexican Lizbeth Ovalle. A major accomplishment for the one who distinguished herself throughout the year.
However, it was during the 2023 World Cup that Dumornay truly captured the attention of the global audience. She was not only a pillar of the Haitian team’s play, but also showed exceptional maturity for her young age, delivering memorable performances. His ability to organize the game and be an offensive engine for his team is well established. These performances allowed him to make a name for himself beyond the borders of his country.
Under the spotlight of OL
Under the leadership of coach Joe Montemurro, Dumornay continues to progress and has taken on a new dimension with Lyon, where she is currently a key piece. OL, which is one of the most successful clubs in Europe, seems to offer the young Haitian an ideal terrain to continue developing her game and reach even greater heights.
A place among the world’s elite
Her rank of 21st in this ranking of the best female footballers in the world testifies to her growing status within world women’s football. She is thus ahead of exceptional players such as Marie-Antoinette Katoto (24th), the Brazilian legend Marta (26th), Lucy Bronze (27th), Salma Paralluelo (28th), Delphine Cascarino (29th) and Irene Paredes (40th), names which, alone, make international women’s football famous.
At the top of the rankings, we find the talented Aitana Bonmatí, recently crowned Ballon d’Or after a remarkable season with FC Barcelona. The Spanish star continues to dominate world women’s football, but the rise of players like Dumornay shows that competition is fiercer than ever.
The inclusion of Dumornay in this prestigious ranking marks an important step in the recognition of Haitian talent on the world stage. As a young prodigy, she embodies the future of women’s football, with immense potential and exciting prospects. Her progression from her beginnings in Haiti to the biggest European clubs is a source of inspiration for many young players, not only in Haiti but around the world.
With exceptional performances at club and national level, and a place among the best footballers in the world, Melchie Daelle Dumornay confirms that she is a rising figure to follow closely in the years to come. Women’s football can expect to see plenty more from this talented player, who has already proven she is ready to make history.
