U.S. Ambassador to Haiti Dennis B. Hankins expressed ambitious wishes for Haiti’s future during the July 2 Independence Day celebration in Tabarre. Flanked by a host of Haitian dignitaries, he expressed hope for the gangs to flee, the economy to be reinvigorated, and progress toward elections to be held by next year.
The remarks, made just two kilometres from the territory controlled by wanted gang leader Vitelhomme Innocent, highlighted the challenges and progress made since his arrival, despite a severe political and security crisis.
Mr. Hankins praised the efforts of Haitian security forces and the cooperation within the Conille government, while acknowledging that much remains to be done. He expressed his faith in the ability of Haitians to take charge of their future and create the conditions necessary for lasting prosperity and democracy.
“We hope to work with all Haitians for a better Haiti,” he said, emphasizing the importance of local initiative and international collaboration to overcome current challenges and seize future economic opportunities.
