US embassies soon to be banned from raising the LGBT flag

The US Congress is preparing to ban US embassies from flying the rainbow flag, a symbol of the LGBT community, on their flagpoles, a decision that marks a victory for conservatives.

This measure is part of a long cultural battle between Democrats and Republicans. It was slipped into the US federal budget, a document of more than 1,000 pages unveiled by lawmakers Thursday morning. Under the bill, only the American flag and official flags are eligible for funding to be flown on embassy flagpoles.

Under President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo ordered that only the American flag be raised on embassy flagpoles, provoking strong protests from the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community.

Since taking office in 2021, President Joe Biden has made the defense of sexual minorities a major focus of his diplomacy. His Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, not only authorized but also encouraged U.S. missions to raise the rainbow flag in June, during Pride Month.

However, the Democratic president is expected to authorize the announced ban, barring any major surprises, as it is included in a bill that must be passed by the end of the week for budgetary reasons.
