Major League Soccer’s (MLS) playoff format is drawing criticism from fans and players as the tournament gets underway. This year, an expanded format was adopted, with the participation of 18 teams, including four wildcat teams engaged in knockout matches. Then, eight first-round matches take place over a three-game series, before moving on to the elimination matches.

This new format was put in place after MLS recorded attendance records thanks to the arrival of Lionel Messi in the league. However, he faced criticism from players and fans. LAFC goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau questioned the need for such long streaks in soccer, emphasizing that it is not a tradition in the sport.

Luciano Acosta, captain of FC Cincinnati, believes the format does not sufficiently reward teams that performed well in the regular season. He thinks it doesn’t necessarily benefit the team that won the Supporters’ Shield.

Despite criticism, this expanded format gives Apple, which holds exclusive global broadcast rights for $250 million a year, more matches to broadcast. However, some feel this could dilute the quality of play on the pitch.

First-round matches will continue through November 12, if necessary, and the conference semifinals will begin on November 25 after an international break. How fans, players and viewers react to this new MLS playoff format remains to be seen.
