Former US President Donald Trump’s sentencing, originally scheduled for July 11, has been postponed until September. Judge Juan Merchan, who is in charge of Trump’s criminal trial for concealed payments, postponed the announcement of the sentence until September 18, following the US Supreme Court’s decision that extended the former president’s immunity.
The postponement comes a day after the Supreme Court ruled that the former president was granted broader immunity. “The sentencing date of July 11 is therefore set aside and adjourned to September 18 if that is still necessary,” New York Magistrate Juan Merchan said Tuesday.
The new date falls about six weeks before the November 5, 2024, U.S. presidential election. Trump was convicted of 34 counts of false accounting to conceal a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels.
