Kenyan and Haitian authorities met by videoconference this Wednesday, June 19, to discuss the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS), an initiative authorized by the UN and placed under the leadership of Kenya.

During this meeting, Edgard Leblanc Fils, president of the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT), and William Ruto, President of Kenya, established an official channel of communication between the two countries.

“The President of the Transitional Presidential Council, Mr. Edgard Leblanc Fils, accompanied by the Presidential Advisors, had, this Wednesday, June 19, a videoconference meeting with the President of the Republic of Kenya, Mr. William Ruto, who accepted to ensure leadership of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMAS) created by United Nations resolution 2699.”, we can read on the social networks of the presidency in a note, specifying that the two Presidents have decided to establish an official communication channel from today.

Further, the CPT highlighted the significant financial contribution of $109 million from the United States of America, while welcoming those that other partners will soon make to the Republic of Haiti.

William Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to the restoration of peace in Haiti. “Kenya firmly believes in the shared global values ​​of multilateralism, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. We will preserve the common principles of humanity that enable us to advance peace, security and stability.”

“We have had discussions with the Transitional Presidential Council of Haiti, chaired by engineer Edgard Leblanc Fils. We will establish communication channels as part of the ongoing commitment to the restoration of peace in Haiti.”, said William Ruto on X.

Note that this meeting was held shortly after the announcement by American Secretary of State Antony Blinken of additional aid of $109 million to support the deployment of the MMSS. This funding, intended for the purchase of materials and equipment for the mission, had been delayed by Republican parliamentarians.

In addition, a delegation from the Haitian National Police (PNH), led by Divisional Commissioner Joachim Prophète, began discussions in Kenya this Tuesday, June 18, 2024 regarding the imminent deployment of the MMSS in Haiti. Accompanied by Japhet Koome, Inspector General of the Kenyan Police, the Haitian delegation took part in discussions aimed at strengthening the capacities of the PNH in the fight against armed gangs.
