The Haiti Hydrometeorological Unit issued, this Thursday, May 2, 2024, a flood warning concerning eight departments of the country which have already suffered heavy rains since the beginning of the week.
According to forecasts from the Haiti Hydrometeorological Unit, several meteorological phenomena have triggered rainy activity across the country. This Thursday, a low pressure area will pass towards the east of Cuba which will cause rain and storms in the Caribbean region.
“Since yesterday May 1, 2024, due to the passage of this phenomenon, heavy rains have started to fall on several departments, notably the West, the North, the North-East, the North-West, Nippes and the Grand-Anse”, indicates the Haiti Hydrometeorological Unit.
According to the latest weather forecast, this rainy activity is expected to continue until Friday May 3, 2024. This situation risks leading to unforeseen flooding in many departments under the influence of heavy rains, warns the said structure.
“For this reason the Haiti Hydrometeorological Unit has issued warnings of threat of flooding and landslides in the departments of Nippes, Grand-Anse, South, North, North-East, North-West, West and Center,” it reads.
Concerning the South department, rough sea conditions are expected, which could complicate navigation activities in the region. Navigators must exercise great caution at sea, warns the Haiti Hydrometeorological Unit.
To conclude the advisory, the Haiti Hydrometeorological Unit and the General Directorate of Civil Protection call on all residents of areas prone to flooding to remain vigilant. It is recommended to follow the safety instructions.
