Successive diets, lack of exercise or age-related sagging can make the skin appear stretched. Far from being inevitable, here’s how to get firm, toned skin again.
When and why does skin lack firmness?
Skin elasticity depends on the quality of the dermis and of elastina fiber synthesized by fibroblasts.
With age, elastin production decreases, leading to sagging skin. Wrinkles, fine lines and a sagging appearance appear. Skin firmness is also affected by environmental factors such as tobacco, pollution and UV rayswhich accelerate the destruction of elastin.
Collagen and hyaluronic acid also play a key role. Collagen helps the skin regenerate and maintain its elasticity, while hyaluronic acid contributes to the hydration and plumpness of the skin. Their production also decreases with age.
Besides aging, other factors such as weight gain, pregnancy and water retention can stretch the skin. When losing weight or after giving birth, the skin has difficulty regaining its initial appearance and may remain stretched.
- Balanced diet : choose some fat burning foods (red fruits, eggplant, pineapple, kiwi) and draining (cucumber, radish, watermelon). Foods rich in vitamin C and protein are essential for stimulating collagen production and maintaining muscle mass.
- Hydration : drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day. Proper hydration improves skin elasticity and firmness.
- Regular exercise : complete sports like swimming are excellent for firming the skin thanks to the movements of the water which act like micro-massages.
- Skin care : use creams rich in collagen and in vitamins A, C and E.
- Adopt a gentle cleaning routine and regular scrubs to stimulate circulation and eliminate dead cells.
- Massages and accessories : dynamic massages and accessories such as jade facial rollers or body massage rollers improve skin elasticity and reduce cellulite.
- Sunscreen : protect your skin from UV rays with an appropriate SPF index to prevent premature aging and loss of firmness.
Regaining firm skin after weight gain is possible with the right routine. A balanced diet, adequate hydration, regular exercise and proper care are essential to restore your skin’s toned and smooth appearance.
