“The bickering between the CPT and the Prime Minister risks jeopardizing the transition,” warns CARICOM, the main designer of the CPT. Indeed, the war declared between Prime Minister Garry Conille and the presidential gang led by Leslie Voltaire is sterile to say the least, thus promoting more insecurity in the country.
Concerned by the spectacle of conflicts existing between the Presidential Transitional Council and Prime Minister Garry Conille, the Caribbean Community calls on both parties to prioritize the best interests of Haiti. In a statement dated October 28, 2024, the Caribbean Community expresses its deep concern about the continuing publicly expressed differences between the President of the Presidential Transitional Council and the Prime Minister of Haiti. This growing lack of cohesion endangers the transition process based on the spirit and principles of compromise, consensus and inclusion set out in the Political Agreement of March 11, 2024 in Kingston, Jamaica and in the Political Agreement of April 3, 2024 developed by Haitian stakeholders.
“This inappropriate and disturbing conflict is taking place at a time when insecurity and humanitarian crises are seriously deteriorating,” deplores the sub-regional organization while specifying. “This only aggravates and prolongs the despair of the Haitian people in search of a glimmer of hope and relief.” These differences between executive leaders also undermine trust between Haiti’s partners and the international community as a whole, preventing the provision of essential assistance that Haiti urgently needs, the document further reads. .
CARICOM, through the Eminent Persons Group (EPG), says it is closely monitoring these worrying developments and has engaged with both the President of the Presidential Transitional Council and the Prime Minister to better understand the roots of the disagreement in order to to direct its efforts to facilitate and return to harmony between executive leaders.
Furthermore, CARICOM calls on all members of the Presidential Transitional Council and the interim government to remain focused on working for the Haitian people and on the important task at hand, which is to prepare the ground for free and fair elections. by February 2026.
