President William Ruto welcomed on Saturday April 13, 2024 the publication of the decree establishing the Haitian Presidential Transitional Council, composed of nine members, thus paving the way for the deployment of Kenyan police officers in Haiti.
“We look forward to the CPT moving quickly to appoint the Prime Minister and Cabinet,” the Kenyan head of state stressed in his statement.
Ruto also congratulated the leaders of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) for their leadership in the intensive consultations that resulted in the creation of this transitional council.
“Kenya is confident that the new political leaders will lay a solid foundation for resolving the crisis in Haiti, restoring security, providing the Haitian people with a political transition and ushering in lasting peace and development,” Ruto said. .
Ruto highlighted Kenya’s strong solidarity with Haiti and its willingness to contribute within the framework established by the 2023 United Nations Security Council Resolution 2699.
Note that the United States government ordered, following the publication of the decree establishing the presidential council, the disbursement of 60 million US dollars to support the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS) in Haiti which will be led by the Kenya.
The disbursement of this sum was ordered by American President Joe Biden who pledged to support the multinational security support mission as soon as the United Nations Security Council voted in favor of the deployment of the said mission.
Recall that President William Ruto said on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, that he had reassured the United States that Kenya would take the lead in the multinational mission aimed at confronting the growing violence in Haiti as soon as a presidential council was established.
