A great Emiliano Martinez allowed the Argentina team to eliminate Ecuador on penalties, 4-2 and go to the semi-finals of the Copa America.
The 2022 world champions opened the scoring in the 35th minute through Lisandro Martinez, after a corner taken by Messi and headed in by Alexis Mac Allister. But Ecuador – who have never beaten Argentina in the Copa America – equalised in the 91st minute through Kevin Rodriguez, also with a header.
Without extension in this America Cup Before the final, both teams went straight to penalties, with Lionel Messi as the first shooter for Argentina, who hit the crossbar with a Panenka. But no other Argentinian would miss his attempt.
And Emiliano Martinez once again played the hero, as he did in the final of the last World Cup against France. He blocked shots from Angel Mena and then Alan Minda in quick succession. Argentina will face Venezuela or Canada for a place in the final of a competition in which they are also the defending champions.
