Published this summer by C3 Éditions, La transe des masques, a collection of short stories by Marnatha Irène Ternier, is intended to be a look at social relationships, family education and the loss of our social values. With her first 410-page book, she enters the literary world and lets flow all her sensitivity and her desire to free herself.
Literature offers the space par excellence to tell the world and especially to assert one’s ideas, even the craziest ones. Aware of such a privilege, Marnatha Irène Ternier appropriates her pen to approach reality and engage in a deep reflection on the way we live day to day with our fears and our masks. Moreover, for Marnatha Irène Ternier, literature is an escape.
This collection contains 14 short stories. It allows the reader to travel through the customs and defects of Haitian society. Moreover, the author claims that this book serves as a pretext for her to point out the logic of the false that is at the heart of social relations. “We all wear a mask. This situation affects almost all aspects of our lives. Our religious practices. Our sexual practices and orientations, etc. ”, insists Marnatha who confides in our editorial staff.
Former Minister of Culture and Communication Pradel Henriquez was keen to point out the merit of this book in not being confined to a specific genre. As the author of the preface, he emphasizes that Marnatha borrows “sometimes from philosophy, history, literary criticism, the history of religions and the damage caused by the latter.”
The praise for the book also highlights the importance of the themes covered. Doctor Jean-Elie Gilles, for his part, revealed the presence of the themes of otherness, the temporality of our earthly existences and trance as a backdrop to the book. “And this otherness not only targets the pain of women in a cruel world still clinging to machismo, which translates into the feminization and bisexuality of many men. It also becomes the standard-bearer of homosexuals and any other group subjected to discrimination…”, he admits.
