European Union: the nine members of the Presidential Council must be appointed as quickly as possible

While the de facto government is visibly blocking the establishment of the Presidential Council by refusing to publish the decree appointing its members, the European Union was quick to speak out on the issue. Indeed, the EU says it believes that it is crucial that the members of the PC are formally appointed by the outgoing Government. This, without further ado.

It was in a press release dated April 15, 2024 that the European Union expressed its position, following the publication of the decree establishing and organizing the Presidential Transitional Council.

“The country urgently needs a Haitian solution to end the current political vacuum and address the long-standing political, security and humanitarian crisis. We call on all Haitian political forces to sincerely cooperate in achieving this objective,” the document reads.

In addition, the EU believes, the appointment of the Presidential Council is also necessary to pave the way for the deployment of the multinational security support mission, mandated by Resolution 2699 of the United Nations Security Council, to support the efforts of the Haitian National Police in its fight against gangs, restoring the rule of law and security in the country, to finally lead to democratic elections held in good conditions.

While the international community is apparently in favor of the establishment of the Presidential Council, the de facto government has engaged in a real standoff with its members. Everything suggests that the installation of the nine members of the CP is not for tomorrow.
