Haiti: the house is burning, but they are fighting for crumbs

Haiti is currently going through one of the darkest periods in its history. The flames of violence and political instability are consuming the nation, leaving the population in a state of despair and desolation. Criminal gangs, seeking power and control, are spreading terror across the country, committing heinous acts such as kidnappings, assassinations, rapes and large-scale looting. The metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince, once bustling with social and economic activity, is now paralyzed by fear and insecurity.

The current crisis is exacerbated by the absence of political and institutional leadership. Since 2017, Haiti has not held elections, leaving Parliament in a state of virtual non-existence. The tragic assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021 left a gaping power vacuum, plunging the country into even deeper chaos.

Faced with this critical situation, the presidential transitional council was formed, in the hope of stabilizing the country and guiding Haiti towards a better future. However, hopes for positive change are quickly dashed by the inability of political actors to transcend their personal interests.

Instead of working together to put out the fire consuming the nation, politicians are engaging in petty power struggles. Their actions are not motivated by a vision of development or a political ideology, but rather by the selfish desire to seize power, place their loved ones in key positions and enrich themselves to the detriment of the Haitian people.

While the house burns, those who are supposed to protect and serve the nation bask in opulence, ignoring the cries of distress of their own people. The humanitarian crisis plaguing Haiti requires an immediate and coordinated response from the international community, as well as a moral and political awakening from Haitian leaders.

It is time for politicians to put aside their personal interests and join forces to rebuild Haiti on solid foundations. It is time to put out the fire that is ravaging the nation and give every Haitian the opportunity to live in peace, security and dignity. The future of Haiti depends on the will and action of its political leaders. It is time for them to answer the call of history and act with courage and determination to save their nation from the abyss.
