May 3, 1844: resignation of Rivière Hérard, first Haitian understudy head of state. During his presidency, Rivière Hérard preferred to leave the direction of state affairs to his cousin Hérard Dumesle. He was overthrown from power by the National Guard of Port-au-Prince who proclaimed General Philippe Guerrier President of Haiti.

May 3, 1867: Sylvain Salnave granted himself the title of “Protector of the Republic”. The populace and the popular army assembling in front of the president’s house in Port-au-Prince acclaimed him president. However, he refused to accept the presidency under these circumstances and instead suggested the title of “Protector of the Republic”.

May 3, 2006: the company Digicel launches with great fanfare its activities on the telecommunications market in Haiti with 450 sites. A year later, Digicel created its Foundation which has to its credit the construction of several schools in the region.

May 3, 2014: 17 people died and 21 others injured in a traffic accident recorded in the commune of Roseaux, Grande Anse department. The victims, mainly traders, were on board an overloaded truck traveling from Port-au-Prince to Anse d’Hainault.

May 3, 2022: Joly Germine, alias Yonyon, leader of the armed gang 400 Mawozo, is extradited to the United States of America, aboard a special plane, accompanied by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) . This individual was prosecuted for conspiracy and violation of the American Export Control Reform Act and smuggling from the United States, the importation of weapons of war and the kidnapping, followed by sequestration for ransom, of American citizens .

May 3 was decreed “ World Press Freedom Day » by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993. This date reminds governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom. It is also a day of reflection between media professionals on questions of press freedom and professional ethics.
