The ARAKA Cultural Center joins the ranks of spaces for reflection destroyed by attacks by armed gangs. These waves of violence which have shaken the capital for several days continue to claim victims. A heartbreaking photo, shared on Facebook, shows the center literally under fire, triggering a wave of poignant testimonies from cultural operators who began their artistic journey there.

Located on rue de l’Enterrement at the southern entrance to Port-au-Prince, the ARAKA cultural center represented much more than a simple place of artistic creation and promotion. Equipped with a library and housing the Araka signet club since 2011, it was a sanctuary where cultural expression was celebrated and nourished, a home where emerging artists found a space to flourish, and to be enriched by encounters and of experiences.

In last weekend’s brutal attack, the center was among the victims who suffered property damage. This attack on the center demonstrates the flagrant disrespect of symbols and has saddened the entire artistic community. Vibrant testimonies followed highlighting the crucial importance of this space in the cultural landscape of Port-au-Prince. Some agents spoke of the cherished memories and inspiring beginnings they had working alongside other artists.

Founded in 1988, the Center is one of the first spaces cultural in Haiti which emerged after the Duvaliers dictatorship, and has always fulfilled its mission of allowing young people to open up to art and the world. He certainly saw a whole generation of writers, artists and cultural editors blossom under the sun of downtown Port-au-Prince. During its various activities to mark its anniversary, the signet club has received, over the years, distinguished guests of honor including the mapou Frankétienne.
