The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) approved by acclamation, this Wednesday, April 3, 2024, the resolution “Support for the democratic transition in Haiti”.

The request to include this draft resolution on the agenda of this special session of the OAS Permanent Council was made by the Working Group for Haiti, in a context where the country is experiencing an alarming security crisis, with the intensification of acts of terror by armed gangs, while the installation of the Presidential Transitional Council is struggling to take place.

The resolution “Support for the democratic transition in Haiti” of the Working Group for Haiti, approved today by acclamation at the special session of the Permanent Council of the OAS, is made up of 11 points requesting, among other things, the member states of the hemispheric organization to support law enforcement in Haiti; to welcome the Presidential Transitional Council; encourage the Presidential Transitional Council to work on the establishment of an electoral council with the aim of organizing elections; to financially support the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS); and to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to Haiti.

Meanwhile, acts of violence continue in the country where armed gangs attempted to storm the Haitian National Palace on Tuesday. Even if the police repelled the bandits’ attack, tension remains in the area around the Champs-de-Mars, the largest public square in the country, where the police were forced to ask residents to leave the area.

On the other hand, the United States, which says it is ready to finance the security support mission in Haiti, continues to say it is determined to strengthen the capacities of the Haitian National Police (PNH) through the support of the US Department of State. The new United States Ambassador to Haiti, Dennis Bruce Hankins, met in this regard, Tuesday, with the Director General of the Haitian National Police (PNH), Frantz Elbé, where he praised the dedication and bravery of the PNH .
