The brand new Prime Minister Garry Conille presented his resignation yesterday Tuesday May 28, 2024 as regional director of UNICEF for Latin America and the Caribbean, according to the Associated Press agency. Conille was designated prime minister yesterday by the Presidential Transitional Council following a consensus.

Garry Conille, Haiti’s new prime minister, is no longer UNICEF regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean, according to the Associated Press. He submitted his resignation yesterday for a position he has held since January 2023.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said in a statement that she wished Conille “all the best in bringing much-needed peace, stability and hope to the children of Haiti.”

Conille studied medicine and public health and helped expand health care in Haiti’s poor communities, where he helped coordinate reconstruction efforts after the devastating 2010 earthquake. He also served as a specialist of UN Development before becoming regional director of UNICEF.

In a publication on Twitter this Wednesday, May 29, 2024, Garry Conille reacted for the first time after his designation as Prime Minister of the Transition by the Transitional Presidential Council following a consensus reached.

“I feel very honored that the Presidential Council has chosen me as the new Prime Minister of Haiti. I would like to thank all the civil society organizations, political parties and members of the diaspora who proposed my name among the other candidates in the process,” wrote Garry Conille.

“Together, we will work for a better future for all the children of our nation,” promised the one who was prime minister under the presidency of Michel Joseph Martelly. He only served a few months at the Prime Minister’s office before submitting his resignation. Which resignation occurred after internal tensions within his government.
