This Wednesday, June 5, 2024, Presidential Advisors Frinel Joseph and Louis Gérald Gilles, representing the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT), had a fruitful meeting with several organizations of the Haitian diaspora. This meeting underlines the recognition of the crucial role that the diaspora plays in the national economy. The Presidential Advisors are firmly committed to ensuring active participation of the diaspora in the political life of the country, reports the Haitian presidency in a press release dated Thursday June 6, 2024.
The Presidential Transitional Council shows their determination to include the diaspora in the democratic process. “Our brothers and sisters in the diaspora must be able not only to exercise their right to vote but also to stand as candidates for various elective positions,” affirmed the CPT in its press release.
At the same time, the Presidential Council and the transitional Prime Minister Garry Conille announced their intention to reduce state spending by merging certain ministries. This measure aims to free up funds for social investments, in order to improve the living conditions of the population. The Council also planned the formation of a Provisional Electoral Council immediately after the installation of the transitional government which will be announced shortly, according to sources close to the Council contacted by Loop. The Provisional Electoral Council will have the mission of organizing general elections at the end of 2025, in order to allow the population to elect new legitimate authorities who will take office on February 7, 2026.
Note that since their installation, the Presidential Transitional Council led by Edgar Leblanc Fils as part of the rotating presidency agreed between the stakeholders, has actively engaged in several initiatives to stabilize the country. Among these initiatives, we note a series of meetings with key actors from civil society and the international community to discuss the necessary reforms. The CPT also launched efforts to strengthen security and fight corruption, in addition to promoting economic reforms aimed at reviving the national economy.
The recently announced recognition and inclusion of the diaspora in the political process should mark a significant turning point in the Council’s efforts to strengthen democracy and citizen engagement in Haiti. Also, the preparation of general elections for 2025 underlines the CPT’s commitment to restoring a democratically elected and legitimate government in the country which has not had one since the end of the presidency of Jovenel Moïse.
