Today is Sunday, July 14, 2024

July 14, 1960 : Clément Barbot, then head of the new militia, the Tontons Macoutes, is arrested: A Duvalierist from the start and co-creator of the Tontons Macoutes (VSN), Clément Barbot, the trusted man, became a sworn enemy of his protector, François Duvalier, whom he tried to overthrow by launching an urban guerrilla war against his regime.

Upon his release after 18 months of imprisonment, he launched a merciless guerrilla war against the regime he had served. Government forces finally overcame him on July 14, 1963.

July 14, 1963 : Clément Barbot killed with his two brothers by government forces: This former schoolteacher from Saint Marc, this lieutenant of the Armed Forces of Haiti assumed the role of executive head of Haiti, during a period of illness of François Duvalier. He was chosen by Duvalier, to become the First Chief of the Tontons Macoutes, the militia that he organized.

His role at the head of the executive brought him into contact with those in power and certain influential foreigners made him understand that he could become the real president of Haiti. Duvalier recovered, understood his ambition and had him arrested. Imprisoned for almost 16 months, when he showed his ambition a little too much. Upon his release from prison, he launched a campaign of terror against the regime he had shaped and served. He was killed by government forces along with two of his brothers.
