Allergic asthma is triggered by contact with an allergenic substance. This type of asthma is common in both adults and children. Here’s how to relieve symptoms quickly.

What is allergic asthma?

L’allergic asthma is, as its name suggests, a type of asthma induced by an allergen. These are most often allergens present in the air or dust such as pollen, dust mites, animal hair or mold spores.

Allergic asthma is the most common type of asthma. It translates to:

  • difficulty breathing;
  • a cough, especially present at night;
  • wheezing;
  • a feeling of chest tightness.

In people with allergic asthma, contact with the allergen in question can also cause:

  • nasal congestion;
  • a discharge of mucus in the throat;
  • eye irritation (red eyes, watery eyes);
  • a rash or hives.

If you suffer from allergic asthma, you not only need to treat your asthma but also the allergy(ies) that trigger it.

Some treatments are effective for asthma, others only for allergies, and still others can help relieve asthma and allergy symptoms.

Treatment is primarily based on avoiding the allergen. There are also medications (ventolinleukotriene modifiers, antihistamines, immunotherapy, etc.).

Simple tips can also help you avoid attacks or reduce symptoms:

  • Clean your home regularly (vacuuming, washing floors) and wash your sheets, pillows and duvets regularly at high temperatures (to eliminate dust mites).
  • Use anti-mite mattresses, sheets and pillows.
  • Close your interior windows during the day and drive with the windows closed during the peak pollen season.
  • Avoid going outside during pollen peaks or wear sunglasses, a mask or other protective gear if you must go out.
  • Equip yourself with an air purifier and use filters if you have air conditioning units at home.
  • Know what to do in the event of a crisis (what medication to take, what to do if treatment doesn’t work, who to call in an emergency, etc.).
