Police officer Hyppolite Clifton was arrested this Wednesday, May 30, 2024 in Bainet, in the Southeast department, announced the Haitian National Police (PNH) on its Facebook page. Clifton, a member of the 27th class, is charged with murder, attempted murder and escaping from prison.
The PNH specifies that Clifton is suspected of having participated in the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Incarcerated at the National Penitentiary, he escaped during the attack on the prison by armed individuals, which occurred on Saturday March 2, 2024.
As a reminder, on the night of Saturday March 2, 2024, a series of attacks carried out by armed civilians affiliated with the “VivAsanm” group allowed more than 3,500 detainees to escape from the civil prison of Port-au-Prince , which then had 4,000 prisoners. These attacks also caused the death of around a hundred detainees trying to escape.
