An escape attempt orchestrated on Sunday, April 28, 2024, by inmates at the Hinche civil prison, in the Center Department of Haiti, ended in blood. According to a partial assessment by the judicial authorities, at least 2 prisoners were killed. Of the deaths, no less than 10 injured including 3 police officers were recorded.

THE HAITI FACTOR, April 28, 2024._Blood was shed midday on Sunday April 28, 2024, in the civil prison of Hinche, capital of the Center Department of Haiti.

The event, according to Me Marlène Abraham, Government Commissioner of Hinche, resulted from an attempted escape planned and carried out by detainees while taking their bath.

To try, the prisoners sharpened the tips of spoons, toothbrushes and pieces of iron, among other things, to confront some police officers securing the building.

The first report communicated to the press by Magistrate Marlène Abraham was of at least two (2) prisoners killed and nearly 7 injured.

To thwart the inmates’ escape plan, the urgent intervention of prison security officers who had requested reinforcements from other city police officers was required.

As a result, three (3) emerged seriously injured from knives made inside the prison center by prisoners who planned the attack.

Among the three victim officers, one was injured in the eye by a detainee who also tore his face using sharp materials in his possession, said the Government Commissioner who visited the places to ascertain the facts.

The agent manhandled by the prisoner was rushed to the hospital and admitted to the operating room, she said.

According to the Magistrate, the inmates took advantage of a work stoppage observed yesterday Saturday by prison administration security agents, demanding better working conditions including payment for several months, to try to escape.

After the clashes which left people dead and injured, the police regained control of the situation.
