Bilbao, chronicle of a banner to seize for Corventina

In the rich and eventful history of Haitian football, two moments have forever marked the international scene, demonstrating the strength and determination of Haitian players in the face of adversity. These exploits, recorded in the annals of sport, are the testimony of a nation which knew how to defy expectations and leave an indelible mark on the world of football.

The first of these exploits dates back to June 29, 1950, during the World Cup in Brazil. In a memorable match at the Estadio Independencia in Belo Horizonte, the United States team faced England, the undisputed favorite of the competition. Against all expectations, it was a Haitian player, a plate washer who emigrated to the United States for studies, Joe Gaetjens, who scored the only goal of the match in the 38th minute. This historic goal, the result of an assist from American captain Walter Bahr, propelled Haiti into the spotlight around the world, demonstrating that talent and passion can triumph over the most pessimistic predictions.

The British returned to FIFA after an absence of almost two decades, with high hopes for the post-war World Cup. However, their performance was disappointing, notably with a defeat against the United States, even arousing the disbelief of the English media. Additionally, the American team was accused of illegally fielding foreign players, but no offense was proven and the case was dismissed, leaving the English to leave the competition on a sour note.

Gaetjens, without American citizenship at the 1950 World Cup, was admitted to the team through the intercession of his captain, Walter Bahr. The latter, of German origin, facilitated his selection by submitting an official application for American citizenship. Bahr, in addition to being the decisive passer in the legendary goal against England, played a crucial role in the inclusion of Gaetjens. However, Gaetjens never became a United States citizen.

The second unforgettable moment came on June 15, 1974, during the World Cup in Germany. The Italian team, led by legendary goalkeeper Dino Zoff, faced Haiti at the Olympiastadion in Munich. Zoff, holder of the world record for the longest period without conceding a goal in the selection, saw his impressive streak broken by a spectacular goal from Emmanuel Sanon in the 46th minute following a pass from Violette midfielder Dino Zoff. This historic goal not only ended Zoff’s invincibility, but also reminded the world of the talent and tenacity of Haitian players.

Today, a third exploit seems to be on the horizon. Dumornay shone on the pitch as he helped Olympique Lyonnais qualify for the UEFA Champions League grand final. With the prospect of facing FC Barcelona on May 25 in Bilbao, an exceptional performance from Dumornay could well register his name alongside the greatest world exploits of Haitian footballers. Like Gaetjens and Sanon before her, Dumornay has the opportunity to transcend expectations and make Haitian football history by leading her team to victory against one of the most prestigious clubs in the world.

These two great international exploits are much more than moments of fleeting glory. They are a reflection of the resilience, passion and talent that characterize Haitian football. Whether on the World Cup pitches or in European competitions, Haitian players continue to inspire the world with their determination and courage.

In conclusion, the history of Haitian football is marked by iconic moments that have captivated the entire world. Feats such as Gaetjens’ goal against England in 1950 and Sanon’s knockout against Zoff in 1974 demonstrated the bravery and determination of Haitian players on the international stage. Today, with Dumornay shining on the pitch and offering Olympique Lyonnais a chance for glory in the UEFA Champions League final, the opportunity presents itself again for Haiti to write its name in the annals of world football. These exploits are testimony to a nation that has defied expectations and left an indelible mark on the world of football. They remind us that no matter the challenges and obstacles encountered, talent, passion and determination can always triumph.
