In Carrefour, insecurity has caused the general dysfunction of schools. The school program for the 2023-2024 financial year has been severely tested by a security context characterized by the invasion of neighborhoods by armed gangs and the disengagement of law enforcement.

Catch-up sessions initiated by the Carrefour Town Hall since June 14, for more than 3,000 students engaged in official end-of-year exams, are a real success, according to the interim executive agent, Jude Édouard Pierre. The latter mentions courses supported by the organization “Food for the poor”, the Economic and Social Assistance Fund (FAES), “Paryaj lakay”, among others.

Nine sites have been selected for the activities, including the Salesian Sisters of Thorland, the Élie Blaise College, the Charlemagne Péralte College, and the Collège d’enseignement classique d’Haïti (CECH). Thanks to the contribution of “Food for the poor”, the beneficiaries are entitled to a hot meal during the sessions and the City Hall is expecting support from the National Education Fund (FNE) to be able to consolidate the initiative, reports the mayor.

Students concerned by the 9th fundamental year exams will have to complete the catch-up sessions on July 20 and candidates for the New Secondary 4 (NS4) exams on August 3, 2024, specifies the president of the National Federation of Mayors of Haiti (FENAMH). This calendar takes into account the organization of the official 9th year exams scheduled for July 22 and the NS 4 exams planned by the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) on August 5, 2024.

In Carrefour, armed gangs grouped within the coalition “Viv ansanm” have taken control of the majority of the districts of the commune. Since the incidents of April 18, the police have deserted the police station, leaving the field open to the bandits.
