Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Wednesday highlighted Colombia’s role in the Haitian crisis, emphasizing the need for the country to help find a solution to this situation. Both heads of state acknowledged that Colombian illicit economies played a role in the deterioration of the situation in Haiti.

During a joint statement with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on an official visit to Bogota, Petro affirmed that Colombia and Brazil aspire to participate in a peaceful resolution of the Haitian crisis. They discussed a “democratic possibility for the Haitian people” during their meeting, reports the Brazilian press.

Although the Brazilian president did not provide further details on this issue, he confirmed that it had been discussed. However, priority was given to the discussion on bilateral relations between Colombia and Brazil, he added.
