Commemoration of the 50th year of the disappearance of Suzanne Comhaire-Sylvain: a tribute to the first female anthropologist and linguist of the Republic of Haiti.

PARIS – From March 1 to 8, 2024, a series of commemorative events will take place at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, to mark the 50th anniversary of the disappearance of Suzanne Comhaire-Sylvain. Rooted in the humanities and social sciences, Comhaire-Sylvain was Haiti’s first female anthropologist and linguist. Throughout her career, she has established important links between Haiti and Africa through her work on the socio-cultural aspects of these regions.

Her work has highlighted the importance of African heritage in Haitian language and culture, and she has contributed significantly to linguistics, anthropology, creolistics, and women’s studies. As such, she is considered a major female figure in the humanities and social sciences.

The events, which will take place in the Miro Hall of UNESCO, will include conferences and an exhibition on the scientific legacy left by Comhaire-Sylvain. These events are organized by the Permanent Delegation of Haiti to UNESCO and are open to the public on the dates indicated, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Entrance is free upon presentation of ID.

To access UNESCO headquarters, located at 7 Place de Fontenoy, 75007 Paris, France, please contact the Permanent Delegation of Haiti to UNESCO at [emailprotected] or +33 145 68 25 19. UNESCO headquarters is accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Come join us in paying tribute to Suzanne Comhaire-Sylvain, a pioneer who paved the way for many women in the humanities and social sciences and who established important links between Haiti and Africa. His legacy continues to influence and inspire future generations.
