Corruption within the Haitian Amateur Athletics Federation: Resignation of President Alain Jean Pierre

On April 21, 2024, the Haitian Amateur Athletics Federation (FHAA) announced the dismissal of its president, Alain Jean Pierre, following revelations of corruption and financial mismanagement. This decision follows a virtual meeting held on April 14, 2024, where irregularities in the management of funds were highlighted.

During this meeting, it was revealed that Mr. Jean Pierre had embezzled approximately 7,600 US dollars. Funds allocated to the CARIFTA Games and other expenses necessary for the proper functioning of the FHAA. In addition, he was accused of having used the name of the federation to obtain personal benefits, including a grant of 4,850 US dollars addressed to the NACAC (North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association) without the agreement of the Steering Committee. A portion of these funds had already been disbursed by the FHAA for expenses related to lodging and airfare.

Furthermore, Mr. Jean Pierre was accused of falsifying receipts from the True Blue Bay Resorts Hotel and refunding plane tickets for previous competitions, including those of Coach Joye Scott for the 2022 World Indoor Championship Coach Joye Scott denied the existence of certain debts repaid by Mr. Jean Pierre, thus adding to the list of accusations of mismanagement.

Faced with these serious accusations and the inability of Mr. Jean Pierre to return the embezzled funds, the FHAA Executive Committee voted unanimously for his dismissal. However, in order to avoid a scandal and preserve the image of the federation, the Committee offered Mr. Jean Pierre the possibility of resigning formally or informally from April 22, 2024.

This situation highlights issues of corruption and financial mismanagement within the FHAA, underscoring the need to strengthen transparency and internal control mechanisms to ensure appropriate use of funds and maintain the integrity of the federation.
