P-to-P, April 26, 2024 [AlterPresse] — The new Presidential Transitional Council should truly prioritize security in Haiti, hopes the National Union of Haitian Police Officers (Synapoha), in an audio message sent to the online agency AlterPresse.

Crime is the cause of the chaos in which Haiti finds itself. It prevents the free movement of people and goods, deplores Synapoha, saying it takes note of the official installation of the said Council.

Solving the problem of crime is a necessary step for the organization of elections and referendums in the country, notes Synapoha, calling for providing the Haitian National Police (PNH) with the necessary means to combat this scourge.

During the first quarter of 2024 (January to March 2024), approximately 2,500 people have been killed or injured due to gang violencean increase of 53% compared to the quarter from October to December 2023, according to a report from the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (Binuh), published on Friday April 19, 2024.

On Thursday, April 25, 2024, the Pnh received, at the Port-au-Prince international airport, a batch of materials and equipment from the government of the United States of America, with a view to strengthening its operational capacity.

“This delivery of non-lethal equipment included personal protective equipment and maintenance materials, intended to strengthen security assistance programs in Haiti,” specifies, in a note, the Office of International Countermeasures Affairs. drug trafficking, prevention and law enforcement, of the US Department of State, which supports the Pnh in the fight against armed gangs.

“Today marks only the first day of the work necessary to restore order, discipline, peace and conditions favorable to the creation of wealth in this battered country”declared Régine Abraham, who spoke, on Thursday, April 25, 2024, on behalf of the 9 members of the new Presidential Transitional Council, at the second part of the ceremony of their installation, at the Villa d’Accueil, in Musseau ( Pétionville).

The Presidential Transitional Council should tackle several major projects, linked to the restoration of public security, the organization of the national conference and constitutional reform, the realization of general, democratic and participatory elections, among others, recalls Régine Abraham, who plays the role of observer within the Presidential Transitional Council.

The task ahead is daunting, as the challenges are numerous and immense, believes, for his part, interim Prime Minister Michel Patrick Boisvert.

“The population expects a lot from you, in a context where everything becomes a priority, alongside security,” affirms Boisvert, emphasizing how the current situation calls for surpassing oneself and a paradigm shift.

Early Thursday morning April 25, 2024, during an unexpected ceremony, which took place under the gunfire of armed bandits, the members of the Presidential Transitional Council swore to respect the Haitian Constitution, at the National Palacelocated at Champs de Mars, in the city center of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
