The Institute for the Protection of National Heritage (ISPAN) announces this Monday, June 3, 2024 the opening of an investigation into the disappearance of two culverines, small caliber transportable cannons, from the Citadelle Laferrière.

In response to this incident, ISPAN opened an investigation to elucidate the circumstances of this disappearance, identify and punish those responsible, and recover the historical documents. Furthermore, public action was launched against the alleged perpetrators and co-perpetrators of this theft.

“The justice system of Cap-Haïtien has begun to question the employees of the Citadelle, who could be involved in this theft. The complexity of the theft indeed suggests possible internal complicity,” we read in the note.

At the same time, descriptive sheets on the culverins will be sent to INTERPOL and UNESCO. This initiative aims to prevent the illicit sale of these art objects, which are of great historical and cultural value, on the international market.
