This Monday, Donald Trump became the first former US president to appear in criminal court

Donald Trump became this Monday, April 15, 2024, the first former American president to appear before a criminal court. A trial is taking place in New York and could conclude less than six months before his electoral duel against the current president, Joe Biden.

As usual, just before the Manhattan court hearing, the Republican candidate denounced political persecution remotely guided by the administration of the Democratic president, calling his trial “attack on America” .

The billionaire is being prosecuted for payments which were intended to buy the silence of former porn star Stormy Daniels (with whom he allegedly had relationships), a few days before the 2016 election, which he had won on the wire against Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

Judge Juan Merchan opened the session by examining the appeals presented by the defense, notably rejecting a request to recuse himself.

Prosecutors also sought fines against Donald Trump for obstructing the course of justice, saying he had repeatedly violated an order on social media in recent days prohibiting him from criticizing witnesses.

The judge therefore scheduled a hearing on this claim for April 24.

Nearly three years after leaving the White House in chaos, Donald Trump could, in theory, risk a prison sentence. However, this would not prevent him from being a candidate in the next presidential election on November 5.

The former president dreams of a revenge against Joe Biden, but would project his campaign into a completely new situation.
