For an education respectful of gender equality in Haiti

This June 21, we celebrate the International Day of Non-Sexist Education, an initiative established by the Network of Popular Education among Women of Latin America and the Caribbean (REPEM) in Paraguay in 1981. This day aims to promote participatory and egalitarian education in matters of gender and sexual diversity, guaranteeing equal access to opportunities for all.

The International Day of Non-Sexist Education is also intended to be an inclusive space aimed at building a more just and violence-free society. It encourages the increasing inclusion of women and girls through educational training in various fields, such as technology, economics, science, sports and engineering, among other disciplines.

It is an opportunity for the Education for All Group (REPT) to recall the importance of this education in the fight for equality between the sexes. On this day, it is crucial to mobilize to promote non-sexist education and build a fairer and more inclusive society for all.

Sexism, defined as the valuing of one human group over another because of their sexual or gender condition, is omnipresent. It is found in families, public and private offices, the media and, unfortunately, at school. In Haiti, the school environment maintains gender stereotypes in a profound, even extremist way, which has a negative impact on the orientation choices, educational careers and professional opportunities of students, particularly in rural areas.

Non-sexist education aims to deconstruct these stereotypes and allow all students to reach their full potential. It promotes mutual respect, the prevention of violence and contributes to the creation of a fairer and more inclusive society for all.

The REPT encourages the integration of non-sexist education in the Haitian education system, an education which is based on several key principles including equality between the sexes as a fundamental right, the involvement of all education stakeholders in the promotion of non-sexist education, among others.

For its implementation, the REPT recommends:

Using inclusive language in schools and textbooks Parental involvement in promoting this education at home Presenting students with positive role models of women and men who have succeeded in all areas of life The organization of workshops, conferences and awareness campaigns to inform on the issues of non-sexist education.
