Gangs ransom some nightclub owners in the town of Delmas.
On condition of anonymity, some nightclub owners in Delmas told Juno7 that armed men demanded they pay large sums of money to be allowed to operate in the commune at night. These thugs have even declared that they can kill or kidnap them in case they do not want to pay the requested ransom. A situation which terrorizes these officials, they admitted to a reporter from the newspaper’s editorial office.
In fact, these gangs organize themselves into real mafia enterprises to extract money from peaceful citizens. In an investigation conducted in Delmas by a Juno7 reporter, around seven nightclub managers admitted that they face pressure from these armed individuals who demand monthly contributions. “They demand a lot of money from these nightclubs and threaten to kidnap their employees or kill them if they do not pay the demanded ransom”,said the reporter.
Furthermore, these ransoms are sometimes demanded in gourdes or dollars depending on the nightclub in question. These owners have declared that they cannot meet the demands of these thugs who take advantage of the laxity of the authorities to impose their law on members of the population. “Those responsible are seriously considering closing their doors in the face of this situation. They believe that their life is more important than a disco”said the reporter.
However, these owners do not wish to disclose the names of these armed groups in order to avoid reprisals. But, they decided to speak to the Juno7 reporter in order to draw the attention of the authorities and the population in general to this situation which is beginning to worry them in the town of Delmas.
If Port-au-Prince is a dead city at nightfall, the town of Delmas is known as a party city because of its nightclubs which operate normally during the night. People often take advantage of these spaces to have fun and relieve the stress of everyday life.
Remember that armed gangs continue to establish their tentacles in several areas of the metropolitan region of Port-au-Prince. They set up toll booths on national roads in order to extort bus drivers. They also took control of several territories with the aim of demanding daily or monthly contributions from businesses, educational establishments and merchants.
