Haiti – FLASH: Hurricane BERLY Category 5, 3 departments on Orange Alert
02/07/2024 12:43:12

The departments of Grand’Anse, Sud and Sud-Est are on orange alert, the departments of Nippes, Ouest, Artibonite and Centre are on yellow alert.

Hurricane BERYL is gaining strength and is still located towards the southeast of the Caribbean islands. During its passage over Haiti, Hurricane BERYL could cause strong winds and rains in the departments of South, South-East and Grand’Anse from Tuesday afternoon to tomorrow Wednesday.

The Hydrometeorological Unit and the National Risk and Disaster Management System have announced an orange alert level for these departments due to the threat of flooding, landslides and rising waters on the southern coast.

The Hydrometeorological Unit, together with the Maritime and Navigation Service of Haiti (SEMANAH) and the Civil Protection (DPC), maintain the ban on cabotage activities on the southern coast of the country. Small boat operators must avoid going to sea from today until Wednesday, July 3.

The General Directorate of Civil Protection and the Permanent Secretariat for Disaster Risk Management (SPGRD) ask the population, especially those living in disaster-prone areas, to respect safety advice, such as:

• Always follow the weather forecast, the advice of the authorities and civil protection. Do not listen to rumours;

• If you live near a ravine, near low tide, or near the sea, make arrangements to move to a temporary shelter or another home in an area that will not flood easily.

• Never cross running water on foot, by bicycle, on animals, in a car or on a motorbike. Don’t tell yourself I have time…

• If you live in an area prone to landslides or mudslides, find a place away from the danger and also leave with your family just in case.

• Secure anything that can be blown away and is outside the house, such as: trash, tools, posters, decorative lamps, light bulbs, etc.

• If necessary, protect boats and vessels, tie them away from the shore.

• Take care of fragile adults, disabled people and children. Always be in solidarity with them.
