Haiti – Politics: Celac coordinators analyze the crisis in Haiti

National coordinators of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) held a meeting this week hosted by Honduras to analyze the crisis facing Haiti.

The event, called URGENT, was convened by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Honduras, Gerardo Torres, who is the coordinator of the pro tempore presidency of CELAC.

CELAC members agreed on the need to provide urgent aid to Haiti. Torres explained the decisions taken at the meeting, during which the CELAC agreement was ratified, establish that any action regarding the Haitian crisis must be taken by Haiti without foreign pressure or interference.

It was also approved, to support the agreement reached by the Caribbean Community and representatives of the Government and Haitian civil society; the proposals of the countries of support and cooperation with Haiti (Cuba, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela) were strengthened to result in a single regional proposal.

A second meeting will take place during which the work plan will be presented and the collaboration agreements with Haiti will be followed.

Honduras President Xiomara Castro urged the bloc’s leaders, in her capacity as interim president of CELAC, to act immediately in response to the crisis facing Haiti.
