Japhet Koome resigns as Commander-in-Chief of the Kenyan Police on Friday, July 12, 2024. The Kenyan police inspector confirmed that he had left his position in a letter to the country’s President, William Ruto. Mr. Japhet Koome has been criticized after anti-government protests that left at least 39 people dead.
THE HAITI FACTOR, July 12, 2024._Kenya was rocked in mid-June 2024 by widespread popular protests against the finance law imposed by President William Ruto.
According to the official human rights agency (KNHCR), 39 people died since the first demonstration on June 18, thus accusing the country’s police in these murders.

Kenyan police have been singled out for firing tear gas, water cannons and live ammunition towards some of the protesters who had stormed Parliament.
As criticism rains down on him, Kenyan police chief, Japhet Koomehas decided to resign. To confirm his decision, he sent a letter to this effect to President William Ruto on Friday, July 12, 2024.

In response, President Ruto’s office accepted and announced to the nation the resignation of Japhet Koome who had been at the helm of the police institution since November 2022.
On the other hand, his deputy, the Police Inspector, Douglas Kanja, was immediately appointed acting police chief by the Kenyan presidency.

The resignation of Kenya’s police chief comes a day after the dismissal of almost the entire government in response to protesters’ demands.
After several days of protests punctuated by violence that led to the storming and burning of the Kenyan parliament by protesters, President William Ruto backtracked by withdrawing the finance bill on June 26, 2024.
